Midnight Syndicate - AU History
The history for Steve diverges late in the events of Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. Instead of defeating Bucky, stopping the INSIGHT helicarriers, and then nearly dying, but being pulled out of the Potomac river by Bucky, who then abandoned HYDRA, Bucky was far more solidly brainwashed by HYDRA. Since Bucky was not conflicted during their battle, he managed to take Steve out and nearly killed him, and Steve was unable to stop Insight. Millions of people died.
Natasha, Sam, and Nick Fury were killed, and Pierce survived the encounter on the top floor of Triskelion. HYDRA won, and Steve eventually came to in a cell.
After several months of brainwashing, using far more advanced and modern techniques than they used to brainwash Bucky Barnes, the Summer Soldier was born. Both Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes continue to fight for HYDRA in the new age, enforcing the new world order envisioned by their current leader, Alexander Pierce.
